Understand what you're checking

Original Writing Deserves a Closer Look

When you write an essay, article, or report, it's easy to overlook a sentence that's too close to a source or a quotation that needs a citation. A plagiarism checker can help you find passages worth reviewing before your work reaches its audience.

UnAIMyText is designed to help you examine your text and make more informed editing decisions. Review possible matches in context, check that sources are credited properly, and make sure quoted or paraphrased material is handled appropriately.

  • Find potential text matches

Identify passages that may overlap with published sources, with the matching source shown next to each one.

  • Review citations and quotations

Check whether borrowed ideas, direct quotations, and paraphrased material have been attributed appropriately.

  • Improve academic writing

Use the results as an opportunity to revisit your sources, strengthen your paraphrasing, and improve your references.

  • Review before sharing

Give your work another check before submitting an assignment, publishing an article, or sending a report.

How it works

Check Your Work in Three Steps

  1. 1

    Paste your writing

Enter the essay, article, or other text you'd like to review, or upload a PDF, Word, or .txt file. Keep within the 3,000-word limit per check.

  2. 2

    Run the check

Start the analysis and wait for the results, which can take up to 2 minutes. You'll get a similarity score and any matching sources.

  3. 3

    Review and revise

Examine flagged passages, compare them with the matching sources, and correct citations or rewrite passages as appropriate.

What does a similarity score mean?

Similarity Is a Signal, Not a Verdict

A similarity score represents how much of a document may match material identified by a checker. It doesn't automatically tell you whether plagiarism has occurred.

For example, a passage may match because it contains a properly cited quotation, a common phrase, a reference, or text that genuinely needs attribution. Conversely, a low score does not guarantee that every sentence is original.

The important step is to review the matched text in context and determine whether the source has been acknowledged correctly.

How to interpret potential matches

  • Quoted material

Confirm that direct quotations are clearly marked and cited according to the required style.

  • Paraphrased ideas

Make sure the wording reflects your own understanding and that borrowed ideas are attributed to their sources.

  • References and common phrases

Not every match indicates a problem. Examine the passage and the reason for the overlap before making changes.

Who can use a plagiarism checker?

A Useful Review for Different Kinds of Writing

  • A student taking notes from printed papers next to a laptop in a library

    Students

Review essays, research papers, and assignments to catch passages that may need better citations or clearer paraphrasing.

  • Two people reviewing a thesis manuscript and editor feedback beside a laptop

    Researchers and educators

Examine written material for possible overlap and encourage responsible source attribution.

  • A writer marking up a printed draft with a red pen next to a laptop

    Writers and publishers

Review articles, website copy, and other content before publication to identify potential text overlaps.

Plagiarism checker vs. AI checker

Similarity and AI Detection Are Different

A plagiarism checker looks for text that may overlap with other material. An AI checker estimates whether writing shows patterns associated with AI-generated text. Neither result, by itself, proves how a document was created or whether an academic integrity rule was broken.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About the Plagiarism Checker

Everything you need to know about checking your text with UnAIMyText.

1

What is the UnAIMyText Plagiarism Checker?

It's a free writing tool that compares your text against published sources to help you review potential plagiarism. You get a similarity score, the sources your text matches, and the overlapping passages side by side.

2

Is the Plagiarism Checker free?

Yes. Each check covers up to 3,000 words and doesn't require an account.

3

How does a plagiarism checker work?

It compares your text against the sources available to it and identifies passages that overlap. Each match shows the source, how much of your text it covers, and whether it's an exact or a partial (reworded) match. Coverage depends on the sources the checker can search, and a check can take up to 2 minutes.

4

Can it check an entire essay?

Yes, if it's between 6 and 3,000 words (up to 60,000 characters). Paste it in or upload a PDF, Word (.docx), or .txt file up to 10MB. For longer documents, use the word counter and check the text in sections.

5

What does a similarity percentage mean?

It's the share of your text that matched the sources checked; the originality score is the rest. A similarity percentage is not the same as a percentage of proven plagiarism.

6

Does a high similarity score always mean plagiarism?

No. Properly cited quotations, bibliographies, common phrases, and other legitimate overlaps can contribute to similarity. Review individual matches before drawing conclusions.

7

Does a low similarity score guarantee original writing?

No. A checker can't access every source, and it may miss some copied or closely paraphrased material. If some sources couldn't be reached during a check, the report says so and the scores cover only the sources analyzed.

8

Can I use it to check a school assignment?

Yes, as a preliminary review if your institution permits it. Follow your school's academic integrity policies and any instructions about approved tools.

9

Does it compare text against Turnitin's database?

No. UnAIMyText doesn't have access to Turnitin's proprietary database, so its results won't match a Turnitin report. Use it as a review before you submit, not as a preview of your Turnitin score.

10

Can it check text from websites?

It checks your text against the published sources available to it, and each match links to its source when a link is available. It doesn't search every website, publication, or private document, so copied text from a source it can't reach won't show up as a match.

11

Does it detect AI-generated writing?

No. Plagiarism checking and AI detection are separate tasks. Use the UnAIMyText AI Checker to assess whether text shows signs associated with AI-generated writing.

12

Is a plagiarism checker the same as a grammar checker?

No. A grammar checker identifies writing issues such as spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. A plagiarism checker focuses on potential text overlap and originality concerns. Use the UnAIMyText Grammar Checker for grammar fixes.

13

What should I do if a passage is flagged?

Review the passage and its source, if one is provided. Add missing citations, mark direct quotations correctly, or rewrite the passage in your own words while attributing borrowed ideas. Don't assume every match needs to be removed.

14

Is my text stored or shared after checking?

To run a check, your text is sent to our servers and compared against published sources. Our Privacy Policy explains how submitted text is processed and retained. Review it before checking confidential, personal, or unpublished material.
